Summary January 1, 1978. Honolulu. Do you remember what you considered a perfect day as a child? For me, it was Daddy Sundays, the beach and Kentucky Fried Chicken! |
We always looked forward to my Dad, Restituto's day off from work - especially when it fell on a Sunday! My Mom always worked on Sundays so if my Dad was off of work, he was in charge of us. If he wasn't, the eldest child was in charge (and that often meant me). That's how it was back in those days. We watched after ouselves and even cooked for ourselves - which mostly meant canned corn beef or cream of mushroom soup with corn and tuna. That was good eats for us! It was such a special treat on "Dad's day Sundays" because we would all get into his 1968 Dodge Charger and cruise over to Ala Moana Beach. My Dad would let us play all day at the beach until we were dead tired! I remember my Dad would get in the water and he would allow each of us to jump off his shoulders and into the ocean. I think that's how we all learned to swim (not well, but enough not to allow ourselves to drown). We would have so much fun. Then, on the way home, it was almost a guarantee that we would stop at Kentucky Fried Chicken to pick up a bucket! That would be our perfect day! It still makes me smile to think about it!
