Summary December 24, 1969. Hammond, Louisiana |
I had a recurring dream that started when I was about 6 years old that I
was able to go through the bushes on the side of our family house in
Grand Rapids, Michigan to my grandmother's house (Mama Jen Farris) in Hammond, Louisiana.
The dream was very vivid, and as I crossed through the bushes, I was
at the front door of Mama Jen’s house. Mama Jen came to the door excited
to see me as she always was. She didn’t seem to wonder why I was there
by myself; she just brought me in to the kitchen where she was making
her world famous breakfast of bacon, eggs and home made biscuits. As
the dream went on, I realized that all our family was there, as they
were every major holiday. Since we lived so far away, we usually only
made it back to Hammond for the Christmas holidays. The trip from our
house in Michigan required a 16 hour drive, and I rode most of the way
in the confines of the back seat of my mom’s VW bug. Maybe that’s why
my dream of the magic bushes was so wonderful, I felt like I could
visit whenever I wanted to on a moments notice.

I am so grateful that we made time to come together every holiday as a family. The sense memory that takes me back to Mama Jen's is the sweet smell of pine needles. Now I live in a house surrounded by pine trees and I am reminded of our wonderful family home and the warmth of our family coming together every time I walk outside!
